| Earlier in August, storms walloped Northwest Indiana and the city of Gary, leaving over 370,000 without power. Nearly two weeks later, thousands of residents in the area are still living without electricity. Families have lost food spoiled due to heat. With schools closed, working parents scrambled their plans and recruited relatives so their children would be supervised, according to the Indianapolis Star. One Gary resident was forced to buy a generator to keep his heart pacemaker online. Another resident struggled to buy groceries for her family because ATMs were offline. Indiana Gov. Mike Braun blamed the long outage on the regional utility company, Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO), responsible for maintaining the electric grid. “NIPSCO continues to fail Hoosiers despite having access to every state resource available,” Braun said in a statement Sunday. “It is time that NIPSCO gets the power back on NOW.” Some residents believe NIPSCO neglected their neighborhoods and failed to prepare for the storm, which toppled countless trees and power lines.
