Millionaires Are Fleeing New York

A new analysis revealed on Monday that New York State’s share of U.S. millionaires is in free fall. The study, released by the Citizen Budget Commission, shows that the percentage of American millionaires living in the Empire State fell from 12.7% to 8.7% between 2010 and 2022. No state experienced a steeper decline.

The findings also show that there is not a single state from which New York has derived a net gain in population, that foreigners drove New York City’s population rebound in 2023 and 2024, and that the Empire State leads the nation in state and local taxes collected, with per capita collections of $12,495. That is 78% above the national average.

This is one of those rare stories that both political parties will seek to promote. To Republicans, these numbers show that New York’s liberal leaders are proactively destroying their state’s economy, which hurts everybody who lives there. To Democrats and socialists, it represents a shifting of priorities away from the rich and toward regular people. Time will tell which interpretation voters embrace. Read more.
