What’s The Difference Between Values & Virtues? A Lot!!!

Boy Scout Helping Old Lady Across The Street

We hear constantly the drum beat of “shared values”, and our nation’s “values”, and common “values” etc. Value means to hold something dear. It means to consider something important. Most people value their homes, their cars, their money, their ideology maybe – it all depends. There was a time in America and throughout the western world where values and virtues were closely allied.

Today, values are in a state of flux. Let’s take an obvious example. 100 years ago in America, virginity was not only a virtue, but it was “valued” highly. The idea of marrying a virgin was sought out and expected by both men and women. Today, not only is virginity not valued, but even marriage has lost its value to most people as they have chosen cohabitation instead.

Now, cohabitation and sexual experience are more highly “valued”. The difference now is that marriage and virginity are still virtues – that which is held dear and important – they have not changed, where values have changed.
