How many times have you heard someone say; “I’m a good person; I’m going to Heaven!”? Let’s examine that statement for a moment. Heaven is a province and a residence of God Almighty. If anyone esle is running Heaven, then it’s going to be a miserable place that nobody will find appealing in the long run.

Think about it! Is your home run the way your friends or visitors want it run, or is it run the way you want it run? Now, with that in mind, put yourself in the position of God. Would you allow people into your home for eternity if they rejected you and hated you and wanted to ignore or even overthrow your authority? Logic, not to mention good sense, would dictate “NO!”.

So, if we can agree that God will be in charge of His own home (Heaven), then what will determine who gets to come in? The obvious answer is only those He wants to come in. How does that get determined? It’s called election. God saves whom He will, and those He doesn’t save are headed for perdition. You might think that “unfair”, but God doesn’t care what you think. He’s God! Would you like God to be the way you are? Heaven forbid!

Salvation, the changing of the heart and the making of a righteous soul is the result of God’s PARTICULAR grace! He chooses whom He will, and that person has a changed heart immediately. Upon the change of heart, there is repentance which is the turning away from your old ways and following God’s ways – a desire to obey although short of perfection. God, through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, has fulfilled the law of sacrifice for sins by the shedding of innocent blood which Christ did on the cross. Before that, He lived a sinless life which made Him the “spotless” without “blemish” sacrificial lamb which was required for the atonement for sin. The difference being that Jesus was the ultimate and final sacrifice for which there is no better nor no other.

Jesus then arose from the dead on the third day after His crucifixion and death. This was God’s evidence of His power and proof of His promise for those who repented and believed upon Jesus Christ as the promised Son of God. What does this tell us? It says that there’s absolutely NOTHING you can do to save yourself. Being a “good person” is irrelevant, because everyone is a sinner in thought word and deed daily. God sets the standard, and nobody lives up to it apart from Christ Who is God manifested in the flesh both fully God and fully man – the 2nd person of the Triune God (singular – one God).

So if you think you’re a “good person”, forget it! Repent and believe upon Jesus Christ, and then with a born again state of being, you will be a “good person” only in Jesus Christ as your Advocate before the throne of God. He did everything necessary for your salvation and access to Heaven. There is no way to be a “good person” apart from Jesus Christ. He did it all, and apart from Him, you can do nothing and will never be righteous (“good person”).

Reading the Bible in its entire context is critical to this understanding, although the New Testament alone can make this clear. As a great man once said; “The Bible is the sword of God, and by itslef the New Testament is a penknife. Do not be deceived by smooth words and deceptive practices.
