Culture

Culture Is What?

Culture in Miriam Webster’s dictionary is HERE! In summary, a culture has some sort of commonality among the members of society. It is a way of life. Now it is also possible to have sub-cultures as well. America is often referred to as “the great melting pot”! To have a Harlem, or a Germantown, or a Little Italy or even a Somalian community is not wrong or bad. People are inclined to join in living in and around those who share a common language and culture.

What becomes difficult is to have a nation of many cultures – it won’t work. You can have a nation that is one culture with sub-cultures in it, but there must be one over arching cutlure in which everyone can identify, support and operate comfortably.

What are the necessary factors to make that possible? In order, there must be a common basis for language, morality, and law. If you go to the Scriptures, you will see a story of the Tower of Babel. Man was united in exalting himself above God. God confounded their language, and they separated and became nations. Therefore, a common language is a key identifier to a nation.

Certainly, multiple languages can be spoken in a nation, but the laws, signage etc. must be in a comon language that all can use. Imagine the impossibility of having highway signs in ten different languages! Imagine television in ten different languages. How about retail signage in ten different languages. You begin to see the dilemma. What about going into court and having translators for ten different languages to address such common things as appealing a parking or speeding ticket! It ain’t gonna work!

There are cultures in the world where stealing your neighbors cattle is considered honorable and acceptable. There are cultures which call for the circumcision of young girls. There are cultures that allow for polygamy. There are cultures that allow for nudity. The list can go on and on. Which ones will you allow to be legal, or will you allow anything and everything to be legal?

If everything is legal, then nothing is legal – it is just license. In that case the wealthiest, the strongest, the most in number, the smartest, the ones with the most eloquent rhetoric etc. will be the ones that rule. The weak, disabled, poor, etc. will be relegated to a merciless life if indeed they are even allowed to live. Is that the society you want?

We hear the mantra of multiculturalism, but what has just been described is the reality of multiculturalism. It is ugly, mean and evil. It is also contrary to good order – Godly order. God’s law order is best for a society. Many do not want to be restrained from their miscreant behavior (sin), but they will cry like stuck pigs when they end up on the short end of the stick. People seem to be very short sighted until they hit the end of the road – BAM!

The core of every culture is religion. Religion is a societal basis for establishing right and wrong, good and evil, acceptable and unacceptable. It manifests itself in every society throughout history. If the religion is man made, then it will ultimately fail. If it is from the God of Heaven, then it, by His grace and nurturing, will survive. To be subject to man’s law is to suffer hypocrisy and inconsistencies. To be subject to God’s law is for all men to be accountable to the same law designed for man’s good.
