| Law enforcement charged two Chinese citizens with conspiracy to smuggle a dangerous fungus into the United States on Tuesday. The move comes after authorities discovered one of the offenders with toxic plant pathogens stashed in his backpack after he flew into the Detroit airport. The man, Zunyong Liu, reportedly initially lied about the reason for his American visit before confessing his intention to sneak the substance into his girlfriend’s University of Michigan research lab. Court documents reveal that the girlfriend, Yunqing Jian, holds membership in the Chinese Communist Party and that the couple plotted to bring biological materials into the United States, despite Jian’s initial claims of ignorance. The fungus at the center of the case is Fusarium graminearum, which scientists classify as a “potential agroterrorism weapon.” It causes head blight in crops and produces toxins that cause vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects in humans and livestock alike.
