Regarding above picture, if you pay $800 per hour (figure a minimum of 2 hours for 500,000 pounds of loading or $1600 for one battery) for the above equipment, fuel and personnel to operate it, you still have the digging/mining, transporting, refining and smelting costs before you get the mineral to the manufacturer to make the battery which would have to cost at least another $1,000). Therefore, it is quite reasonable to expect that one battery to cost $2600 (in reality, probably a lot more like $5,000 +), and Tesla has to mark their cost up at least 50% (that’s a very conservative mark up – especially considering how much overhead they have, and so now that battery is at least $3,900, but wait, there are other things that go into the equation like other materials and the cost of manufacture etc. So now, we’re at least at $5,000 to the consumer. Really? Look at this receipt and weep as a Chevrolet car battery cost nearly $30,000, and note the odometer reading in the top right – that’s at 70,000 miles for replacement! You might as well throw away the car (listed by manufacturer as starting at $30,000) and buy a new one! Likely hidden in the cost of the battery below is the fees for disposal of the old battery which is loaded with toxic waste.

And, what is the range of a Chevrolet EV? The longest range is the Equinox which is between 280 – 300 miles in their own literature. Of course that’s if you’re operating in warm weather. Cold weather can cut that in half to 140 – 150 miles. Ah, but wait a moment, Equinox (GM) says it is not good to “top off” the battery, but only charge to 85%. Whoa, that just reduces the range from 280 – 300 miles to 238 – 255 miles, and in cold weather, reduces that to 119 to 127.5! Now, what if you want to visit grandma for Thanksgiving, and she’s a 300 mile drive away? Charging takes 4 hours, and in the winter, you will have charge at least 3 times (12 hours) each way to grandmother’s! Of course, to be on the safe side, you’re going to be looking for a charging station before you run out of a charge completely, so, in the winter, you’ll probably want to recharge every 100 – 110 miles to be on the safe side, which means then that you also have to find a charging station. In rural areas, they are hard to find, and sometimes, no matter where you are, they don’t work when you find them.
Keep in mind, a Tesla has a better quality battery. If you take into account all of the government subsidies, this writer has read where a Tesla actually costs $270,000. But what commoner could afford to pay $270,000 for a car? None. That’s why we’re subsidizing them so they only cost around $70,000!
Recently in California, the Governor by executive fiat declared that no new gas powered cars could be sold in his state by 2035! The very next day, he asked people to go easy on the electric grid and don’t charge your EV’s between the hours of 4p.m. and 9p.m. Hmm? 4 hours to charge starting at 9 p.m. means stop charging at 1 a.m. Ah, but don’t over charge, but stay at 85%. Maybe it would be better to just take the bus, or if you’re not too far from work walk or ride a bike. Do you really need a car? All of this for Mother Earth, but she’s worth it – right?
