Do organ donations save lives? Maybe. A healthy heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and bone marrow have a current market value of $1,000,000.00 or more! Consider this; if you, or a loved one, is laying on a gurney in a comatose or semi-comatose state, and the medical staff is confronted with a choice of a.) making $50,000 or $100,000 saving your life, or b.) letting you die in favor of $1,000,000 for the sale of your organs, plus the fabulous fees for surgery and hospital care for the recipient, which would you choose – especially if your children need a college education paid for, your mortgage payment was due on your multi-million dollar mansion, or you’ve got payments on your BMW or Mercedes to make? Tough choice – huh?
With the abysmal ethics of today, I would not want to be the person on the gurney unless I had specifically said “No” to organ donations on my driver’s licence. What non-medical person can make a determination that a life is salvageable, or not? Think well on organ donations and how they may come about. This writer lost an 18 year old daughter to a car crash, and the hospital and medical staff was very anxious to get signed off on her organs. This writer didn’t know the above details at the time, and signed off. Regrets? Yes!
