We’re all ignorant – it’s just in different subjects and varying degrees. But, are there some subjects about which we should all be knowledgeable? Yes, if you wish to preserve that which you own, you better know that you need to have proof of ownership. If you wish to be treated justly, you better have knowledge of the judicial system. If you wish to remain free, you had best have knowledge of the Constitution. And, most importantly, if you wish to go to Heaven (and most everyone does), you better have a good knowledge of the Bible and a changed heart. God has the final say; He’s the ultimate Judge, and your plea of ignorance will fall on deaf ears with Him.
Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
If the above Scripture quote tweaks your conscience, then diligently investigate what God’s will is. Jesus confirms this need in John 14:15-24 15“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper,f to be with you forever, 17even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will beg in you. 18“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.
It should be noted that Jesus’ commandments include all of the relevant commands from the Old Testament (Tanak – Torah, Writings & Prophets). The ceremonial and sacrificial laws have been abrogated in Christ.
