Can U Escape?

Eternity Road

Can you escape….eternity? There are only two possibilities – YES or NO! Those who say “Yes” believe that when they die (we will all die – show me an exception) that they will no longer be conscious. This is what they believe, but believing something doesn’t necessarily make it true. One could believe they are the smartest or strongest person on earth. Or, they could believe they’re President of the United States. Belief and certainty are not one in the same. The person who says yes, is not certain – it is just their belief.

The person who says yes must ask themselves why are they who and what they are? Each person on earth and throughout history has a personality that is distinctly theirs. They have non-material qualities such as love, hate, fear, joy, memories, doubts and many other non-material qualities. Physical death is a material event. What happens to the personality and the non-material qualities of a person? Do they die with the person’s body? If so, what evidence is there that that is the case? That is a rhetorical question, as there is no evidence ever produced.

The person who says “NO” is a realist. The moment you die physically, you enter eternity. Nobody can pinpoint a physical location for eternity. In fact, eternity is quite difficult to define, and impossible to comprehend. A feeble definition would be a period of time without beginning or end which means that time actually becomes irrelevant and non-existent. When addressing the subject of eternity, we are delving into a realm not our own. It is the realm of GOD who created everything including us. He breathed life into man, and in doing so, He created man a spiritual being. A spirit is non-material, and yet it is real – it is a personality, thoughts, and consciousness. Indeed, our spirit is the essence of our consciousness and who and what we are.

Man, as a created being, was made to glorify GOD and enjoy Him forever. Now the rub comes in when it is clear from GOD’s word in Scripture that He has two places for mankind to spend eternity. If He decides He wants your company for eternity, then you will spend it with Him in Heaven, and that is eternal life. If He decides He does not want your company in Heaven, then He has a place in Hell for you – eternal death separated from Him and His tender mercies. Heaven is nothing but peace and joy. Hell is nothing but torment and misery. When you consider that which ever one is your end, it is for ever and ever – that’s a long time – beyond comprehension!

Some people have deceived themselves into believing (remember believing doesn’t necessarily make it so) that they can somehow please GOD and deserve Heaven. GOD makes it clear in Scripture that that is not possible. It is only by His grace that we have salvation from our sins and thereby go to be with Him in Heaven when we die, and we will die one day unless Jesus Christ returns before that day.

GOD laid out a very simple criteria for salvation. Repent (change your ways) of your sins and believe upon Jesus Christ as the Son of GOD. That’s a pretty simple criteria, and yet many people find it offensive and impossible! Why? It takes the work of the HOLY SPIRIT to change someone’s heart to love GOD. If you don’t love GOD, is it too late for you? Consider the thief on the cross who repented at the last minute after having lived a life of crime, been sentenced to death and even having mocked Jesus Christ while they were both on the cross. Jesus accepted that thief and told him “Today you will be with me in paradise!”

Where do you want to spend eternity?
