From A Former Neighbor Who Escaped Castro’s Cuba!

The below comments come from Marla Fernandez, and I have offered my comments below hers.

Conscience or Control: What My Family’s Flight from Cuba Taught Me About Freedom

by Marla Fatima Fernandez

In 1961 my family fled Cuba for Miami. We left behind a nation that had traded faith and reason for slogans and control. Many outside observers praised Fidel Castro’s “revolution” as social progress, but those of us who lived it saw something different: the slow replacement of conscience with coercion.

What strikes me today is that America is not being conquered by foreign ideology so much as exporting its own moral confusion. Our universities, corporations, and foundations once carried liberty abroad; now they often export secular technocracy—systems of efficiency without virtue. The result is a global feedback loop where conscience disappears in the name of progress.

The twentieth century’s real battle was never capitalism versus communism. It was conscience versus control. My family escaped because control won in Cuba. The question before us now is whether conscience will win in America.

That renewal won’t come from another party faction or philanthropic empire. It begins when ordinary citizens reclaim the habits that make self-government possible: reading deeply, reasoning honestly, and recognizing the moral law written on every human heart. That’s what I call Harmony—ordered liberty under God.

Touchstoneconnect.com Commentary:

GOD’s law is written on the hearts of men, but the heart according to Jeremiah, is deceitful above all else and desperately wicked Jeremiah 17:9. Additionally, Romans 3:10 -18 shows just how wicked. Therefore, without repentance, and belief in Jesus Christ Mark 1:14, 15 and the application of His law in our society, we haven’t got a chance John 14:15 -24. Ephesians 2:8, 9 tells us we can’t do it on our own – this makes people mad. They want to be in control! Proverbs 14:34 tells us to be righteous as a nation. Isaiah 5:20 condemns those who twist the truth! Romans 13:3, 4 tells us what the government is for. Now, for all you liberals out there who think this is a bunch of nonsense, let me ask you one question; “Do you have anything better to offer?” You know the answer is “NO!” And to Marla, whom I believe to be sincere, GOD will always be in control Matthew 10:29. A sparrow is likely the most common and insignificant bird on the planet. Romans 3:23 lets us know that we must trust and rely upon GOD for the solutions to the problems. We must use the means of grace, the Word, Prayer and Scraments (2 only – baptism & the LORD’s Supper). Romans 8:28
