Adversity is something that has plagued our world from the beginning. Adam and Eve begat Cain. Their second child was named Abel which meant worthless, because they thought their first son would be the one to fulfill God’s promise in Genesis 3:15. When it came time to make an offering to God, Cain gave of his fruit, but Abel gave of the “first” of his flock. There are two considerations here; one that Cain had a poor attitude toward God by not giving the “first” of his fruit, and the second that there was no blood sacrifice either. As a result, Cain instead of being repentant, was angry and he killed his brother Abel who was a “righteous” man. Later in Scripture, Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth. Ham saw his father “naked” and drunk, and mocked the sight to his brothers who, without looking, covered Noah’s nakedness up. Noah found out about it and put a curse on “Canaan” (Ham). He put a blessing on Shem and Japheth. Noah would not have found out about the incident had not either Shem or Japheth told him. Therefore adversity was born again among brothers.

Later on, God called Abram (later Abraham) out of the Ur of the Chaldeans. God promised Abraham he would have many children. Abraham was getting anxious about God’s promise, so he took Sarah’s handmaid, Hagar and had Ishmael with her. This did not please God, and later Abraham had, by Sarah, Isaac. Isaac was the promised “seed”, and Ishmael was not to receive the ultimate blessing even though he was the first born. Ishmael went on to become the Arab nations, while Isaac went on to become Israel. This caused a rift between brothers, and ultimately nations! They are still fighting today – adversity among brothers. Just to clarify, Abraham was the father of both Ishmael and Isaac, and Shem was the father of Abraham. Shemites was shortened to Semites. So, both the Arabs and Jews are Semites, and they fight each other and hate each other. The Arabs and Jews are therefore, both anti-Semites!
