Why is this a BAD IDEA? The United States is a nation formed by STATES! Some states have huge populations like California 39 million, and some states have very small populations like Wyoming with 581,381! The U.S. House of Representatives is representative of population, and the U.S. Senate is representative of states. This was the compromise so that states had equal representation regardless of population, and was a contingent reason for them joining the union. This was thoroughly undermined with the 17th ammendment which took away from the state legislatures the power to elect and remove U.S. Senators and put it to the “popular” vote. Now, there’s no mechanism people can employ to get rid of a Senator apart from the Senator being expelled by his fellow Senators or once every six years voting him out of office.

The last bastion of state’s rights (10th Amendment) is the electoral college which compels the electors of the state to vote for the winner of the state’s Presidential election. If we go to a national popular vote, then all of the state’s votes are controlled by the national popular vote, and fly over America (blue states) will become irrelevant.

Another concern that nobody has mentioned is how close does a national vote have to be before it requires a recount. For example, if a candidate gets 48 million votes to his opponents 34 million, there woudl be no question, but what if a candidate gets 40.99 million votes to his opponents 41.01 million votes? That might be close enough to warrant a recount! Who will be responsible for the recount? How will the recount be kept honest? We are talking about the top political office of the nation. How coveted is that for the people behind the scenes who want to weild power and rape and pillage the American people, and/or the whole world? Did America’s founders fight and die for a bunch of apathetic ignoramuses to populate this nation and allow it to fall into the hands of evil men?

Think twice about a national popular vote – it is a BAD IDEA!
