Is It Or Isn’t It A Miracle?

Shawshank warden

Warden Of Shawshank Prison Discovers The Escape Of Andy Dufresne

It’s A Miracle was the warden’s exclamation in the movie Shawshank Redemption.  Of course the warden was speaking of Andy Dufresne’s escape from his cell.  Right after that, the warden discovered that indeed it was not a miracle, but that Andy had burrowed through the wall of his cell and escaped through natural means of his own making.

Some people say when a baby is born; “It’s a miracle!”  Some people will attribute the fact that they made it home safely in rush hour traffic was a “miracle”.  Others might say it’s a “miracle” if they recover from an illness after taking medicine.  All of this cheapens the meaning of the word miracle.

A miracle is a supernatural event which involves the direct intervention of God to accomplish His ends whatever they may be.  Jesus Christ’s resurrection, turning water into wine, raising Lazarus from the dead are all supernatural events and therefore, miracles.  The previous two paragraph’s list is of all natural events as opposed to supernatural events.  Think carefully in the future before you exclaim that something is a “miracle”.  Do not cheapen the word and its meaning.
