The Oklahoma State House on Tuesday passed a bill to legalize the use of decomposed and ground-up human remains as soil fertilizer, taking a step toward including so-called “natural organic reduction” as a form of cremation under state law.

The legislation won support from Republicans and Democrats and is sponsored by a pair of conservatives representing largely rural districts. 14 states have already legalized human composting, but Oklahoma would become the first red state to do so. Many farms already use what Representative Jim Shaw calls “humanure” as land-applied fertilizer. Read more.
