Selwyn Duke article HERE! This writer’s comments below:
Today, we are constantly barraged with the term values. Values has become a general term for what’s important to a group of people, and/or an individual. Over time, values have been manipulated and highly flexible. For example, nobody publicly “valued” abortion 100 years ago in America. Yes, of course there were people who had and pursued abortions, but they were a small minority of people, and they were neither proud of it, nor outspoken about it.
Today, 100 years later, people actually brag about having abortions, and they are taxpayer funded. Not only that, but certain states in America have offered to pay people their expenses to travel to that state where abortion is “legal” so they can have one. This is being done as a poke in the eye to the states that have either outlawed entirely, or severely restricted abortion.
Based upon that one example, abortion is a “value” that is subject to change based upon societal preferences and tolerances. In other words, “values” tend to be highly subjective, and they change over time with societal fluxes. On the other hand, there are “virtues” which are not subject to change and have a history of thousands of years.
Virtues (Phillippians 4:8) generally describes whatever is noble, just, pure, lovely and praiseworthy as a virtue. To extrapolate from that, we can be more specific and say from Galatians 5:22 that love, joy, peace, longsuffering (patience), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control would all be virtues. Coming forth from those would be honesty, truth, and justice. And, against those, there is no law. In other words, those are things for which there are no sanctions even in the most intolerant and evil of societies and governments. Of course that does not mean that those things if acted out will not be persecuted, perverted or mocked.
In examining any of the above “virtues” do you see a conflict with current societal “values”? Do abortion, homosexuality, transgenderism, recreational drug use, blasphemy, profanity, adultery, divorce, politicians taking bribes (campaign contributions), corporate greed through monopolistic behavior, sex trafficking of children, trafficking of people in general, lawfare against your enemy, lying, stealing, cheating, Socialism, Communism, Fascism, Marxism, Leninism, Maoism, monopoly capitalism etc. reflect the Biblical description of “virtues”. This writer would say “No”! And yet, all of these are “values” of today’s society, although not everyone practices all, or even most of these things, although all of them are practiced. And, some even practice one or two of the above while vehemently opposing the rest. Thus, you have chaos and hypocrisy.
The bottom line is that certain people of America have perverted the language and the culture, so that “values” is a term that has become synonymous with what’s really important and must be respected by all in our society. You’ve certainly been made aware of the need to be sensitive to people’s feelings, while at the same time those “feelings” are being codified into laws which affect people who strongly oppose those feelings being codified into law. Until recently, you had to believe that a man could get pregnant. You still have to believe that two men should be entitled to get married to each other. The push is on to lower the age of consent for sexual activity. How low should one go? Maybe we can draw the line at ten years old? How about 2 years old? Those, of course, are conflicting “values”, while they are both absolutely antithetical to Biblical “virtues”.
The top of the article has pictured (someone’s unbiblical estimate) Jesus Christ juxtaposed to Karl Marx. Jesus Christ and His disciples followed the word of GOD in the Bible and the “virtues” it represents. Karl Marx and his disciples follow the lusts of man and the movement and authority of the state and those in charge at any given time and the “values” they represent.
As an individual human being, you must decide whether you are oriented toward “values” or “virtues”. “Values” change constantly and lead down the slippery slope to perdition. “Virtues” don’t change, and they elevate everyone to the highest aspirations hopefully leading to eternal life in Heaven. As Moses said to the people of Israel Deuteronomy 30:19 “Choose life!”. He said this to them after declaring GOD’s promises of blessings and curses in Deuteronomy 28.
It should also be duly noted, that GOD does not allow His people to plead ignorance Proverbs 24:12.
